Hi Stan, This particular idea is now defunct. I have focused my attention on supporting the ZAPP Animal Center in San Felipe who has found themselves in dire straights lately. Thanks for checking in--much appreciated. Shawn

Thanks for posting your blog. Great job, and congratulations for being the person behind saving that puppy. Sara has done a great thing as well (of course), but don't ever forget—if you had turned away and simply done nothing, that puppy would be in…

Funds Dry Up, Resolve Strengthens & Animals Hang in the Balance

Many of you are familiar with Steven Forman and the ZAPP Animal Center in San Felipe, Mexico. They are the ones responsible for setting up and managing the area's 7.5 acre animal sanctuary for stray and indigent dogs, organized numerous spay and neuter clinics and helped put an end to the brutal practice of electrocuting unwanted dogs in Mexicali.

Two Cities, Stray Dogs, and the People that Give them Hope

With a few days off work and Mexico on my mind, I was ready for an adventure. Baja never disappoints adventure seekers, although for me, it's always a mixed bag of highs and lows. I love Mexico, but there's nothing like rampant poverty and hundreds of stray animals to keep any notion of a "vacation" in check.

Luckily for me, I wasn't going to Mexico for a vacation. I went South of the border to learn more about the organizations that are helping animals in the area, and to see how I might be ab… Continue

Steven Forman's ZAPP Animal Center Opened on Monday!

I wanted to post this message from Steven Forman & ZAPP in San Felipe Mexico:

Hi ZAPP Supporters and ZAPP Network...

We are officially open today for intake. We already have sixteen dogs on site and we're sure the population will grow steadily. What a relief to finally get ZAPP open, so it can do its job,by providing solutions for all animal related problems in San Felipe Mexico.

Please don't hesitate to bring "at risk" animals to the site for care.

For now please call any of these phone… Continue

Pet Store Doublespeak: What pet store staff might tell you and what it really means

This article is posted in response to San Diego's Mission Valley Mall (owned by Westfield) leasing a prominent retail space to a company called "Puparazzi". It's a store that sells puppies sourced "from all over the US", clearly from puppy mills. I checked in with them and politely asked where their puppies come from. One person said repeatedly "from their mothers", another said "from the highest quality breeding facilities". How could Westfield malls--and the San Diego public--let this happen o… Continue

Hey Shawn I found out about Hope from my friend Barbara Martin, and another friend Judith, from Mexico. I took a pup home to RI from San Pancho yesterday. She is the sweetest thing. t was an interesting experience. I wish I could've taken all of the ones that need help home with me.
I like the beach breaks here and some spots out on Sakonnett point. But I prefer surfing in Mexico to here! Karen

We do have a few things in common indeed! You probably recognized some of the locations in my photos than. This is a great resource for change you have developed Shawn. Congratulations. I expect it will do a lot of good.

Hi Shawn, Thanks for the welcome! I read that you brought home a mexican beach dog? Did you get it here in Cabo when you were down? Thats great! There are so many dogs here that need people like you! I just helped rescue 5 from a family who were in such bad shape that 2 had to be put to sleep, one had been hit by a car and not been treated and had been in pain with broken hips for months..on top of having severe mange the other had mange so bad she could hardly sit or lay down. the other 3 are under observation with the vet. We know that most of this is due to lack of money for vets but some is just plain lack of caring.

Hi Shawn,
I'll check with Sunny to see if we have any BBT's. A volunteer for BAS just bought a yorkie from a breeder and I couldn't believe it !!! I guess you just can't educate everyone!

Hi Shawn.

Sorry for not replying your message before. The meeting was very useful, I think we agree in many ideas. I really hope this work, because truly I'm kind of sceptic with our authorities (something like "been there, done that" so I don't trust very much). Many times we thought we have advanced and then... it wasn't true. The only true thing is that we have so much work to do! :) See you.

It would be my suggestion that the resources section be in the main part of HAN and not limited to this group so that everyone will be able to easily find them. Thanks Alex

Hi Shawn,
Thanks so much for the comment! I finally had time to add pix because Tuesday I joined the ranks of the unemployed... a bit scary, but the blessing in that is I'll be able to put more energy where my true passions lie, in helping animals. I invited over 150 people here, many from rescue groups I've worked with - about 6 have joined us so far, and I'm hoping more will follow soon. Keep up the great work!

And one more ---There are alot of people who have animals that need homes and that would be another good section in this web site.
